MRIA was formed in 1968 in Southern California. Prior to its formation, several model railroad industry leaders, such as Leo Campbell (Campbell Scale Models), Tom Ayres (Ayres Models), George Hook (Central Valley), Ed Suydam (Suydam) and Ted Hollow (Balboa Models) met regularly to discussion issues of common interest. During these meetings, the need for a national organization became clear.
Discussions about a national association began in 1967 at the NMRA's convention in Miami, Florida, and continued in 1968 during the NMRA show in San Francisco. At the Miami meeting, a Board of Directors and the Officers for MRIA were chosen.
Listed below are the names of the people who have served on the Board of Trustees and as Officers for MRIA. It is the efforts and dedication of these people that have helped advance the model railroad industry and provide for its members and for the future.
On July 1, 2005, MRIA became the Model Railroad Division of the Hobby Manufacturers Association.
